A third of the way through the flaneurish street songs of Crumb 's debut comes the hook "fall down say a prayer", repeated slowly. It feels like sinking through a surreal manhole, with all the shoegaze showmanship of Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space. Dizzy daydreams and narcotics are extrapolated to pen the intimidating mystique humdrum of New York City: a musician dies on stage but walks off with jazz hands.
Obituaries and biographies often give the illusion that lives unfold along ever-advancing, if wandering, timelines. In fact, those forward trajectories are made up of millions of tiny spirals--routines followed, patterns performed, habits fallen into. Most days are slightly deviating copies of one another, with periodic breaths of novelty. On their debut full-length, Jinx, New York City psych-rock band Crumb give shape to the ambivalence and hypnosis of those lulling spirals, bending indie rock and jazz influences to shape a clear-eyed perspective tinted amber with dirt.
