Album Review: 3AM (La La La) by Confidence Man

As Brat Summer draws to a close, are we about to prepare for a 3AM winter? “I just moved to London, and I’m taking some time off… so hit me up”. So we hear Janet Planet say at the beginning of Confidence Man‘s third album, and it feels like a rather autobiographical touch. For the Australian band did indeed relocate from Brisbane to London after the lockdown, and the entirety of 3AM (La La La) feels like a full-on homage to British dance culture.

2022's Tilt brought eyes to the brilliance of Confidence Man; the Australian dance quartet lauded for their vital live performances. We need only look to their endless string of appearances at this year's Glastonbury to observe how the music enthusiast community extols their shows. This heralds 3AM (LA LA LA), their third album. While it is enormous fun, there should be no expectation of a 'shock of the new'; it can feel, somewhat, like ConMan are treading water.

Through carefully modernised idolisation of the sticky raves and UKG breakbeats of the '90s, London-via-Australia outfit Confidence Man's third record '3AM (LA LA LA)' is a rave-pop romp. The swaggering bravado of singles 'I Can't Lose You' and 'So What' mark a new era of getting wrecked and living it large. There's more of the trademark tongue in cheek megalomania, but this time it's in a moist underground warehouse during the liminal period straddling the '90s and Y2K.
