Rebekka Karijord and Jessica Dessner’s rather special song cycle harks back to Schubert in its pictorial settings but also brings in healthy elements of modern classical music and folk The seasons have long held a fascination for composers and artists, stretching back thousands of years. Classical music can boast an impressive canon with examples from Vivaldi, Piazzolla and to a lesser extent Tchaikovsky, captivating classical listeners - while folk and pop music frequently delight in the changing of the meteorological guard. The inspiration behind the work of Complete Mountain Almanac, however, has more serious implications.

A song for all seasons By way of introduction, Complete Mountain Almanac is a four-member collective whose genesis derives from the long-running friendship of Sweden-based singer-songwriter Rebekka Karijord and Italy-based poet Jessica Dessner. Once the pair conceived the idea of crafting a musical project together, Dessner's musician brothers (Aaron and Bryce, both members of The National) also joined in to round out the group's ranks. While I generally do my best to avoid using the word "pretentious" in discussion of music, given it's vastly overused, here's my tacit acknowledgement that the word is not an unreasonable descriptor when discussing this group's self-titled effort.

Complete Mountain Almanac is an ambitious project with quite a backstory. Fifteen years ago, Norwegian songwriter/composer Rebekka Karijord and American poet/dancer/multimedia artist Jessica Dessner met by chance in Brooklyn. They forged an enduring friendship that eventually led to the genesis of this wonderful record - but not without a significant twist.
