Album Review: Change by Cindy Wilson

Great, Based on 3 Critics

Record Collector - 80
Based on rating 4/5

While wearing its psychedelic 60s heart proudly on its sleeve, this 10-song album offers far more than just a meander through the B-52s singer's musical inspiration. That it has taken Cindy Wilson four decades to venture out alone (two recent teaser EPs notwithstanding) is all the more surprising given the confidence on display here. Fusing those 60s influences with rich electronica creates a tableau that's familiar in parts, but offers a distinctive twist to the predictable.

Change is certainly an apt title for Cindy Wilson's first solo album. For nearly 40 years, Wilson has been singing with the B-52's, and their bouncy, upbeat sound -- and the distinctive vocal blend of Wilson and Kate Pierson -- has been her musical signature. We throw around the phrase 'creative' too much these days. Will a 25-year-old entrepreneur with a boutique coffee delivery start-up, for instance, create anything for his own leisure? Or to express anything beyond a desire for easy profits? And crucially, will he continue to 'create' decades later, when every support system he knows has shifted into parallel dimensions? Nah - the true artist shifts with their reality, accommodates to new bodies, learns new languages to enable creation within and without. For Cindy Wilson, the joy of creation flows freely through song - she's spent over half her life in Athens' original party ambassadors, the B-52s, and helped write some of the most outrageous pop songs of the Eighties (hello, 'Love Shack').
