Genre is a fickle thing. When it comes to certain fan bases, the bands who hold a staple-status are often ostracized for wandering beyond their scope. Then there's Ceremony — the Rohnert Park, CA-bred quartet who have built a reputation for never doing the same things twice. The Lowdown: Since 2004, Ceremony have worn many hats. Though they changed their name before the release of their official debut, the group was originally known as Violent World, a moniker that, at the time, clearly telegraphed their intentions. Ceremony's first album, 2006's Violence Violence, is composed of 20 songs that clock in at 20 minutes total.
I'm shocked people are still moaning about Ceremony's shift in style. Honestly, whether you like it or not, it's time to get over it. The backlash this band's gotten, not to mention others like Title Fight and Pianos Become the Teeth has always been confusing to me, especially as folks are still calling it experimental. It's evolution, whether or not it's your cup of tea -- well, that's up to you.
