Album Review: Tigermending by Carina Round

Excellent, Based on 4 Critics

PopMatters - 90
Based on rating 9/10

I’m not entirely sure what constitutes a “cool” female artist versus a “weepy” female artist. There must be some clear definition in some music reviewer’s mind which gets flagged the moment a word or turn of phrase is used in a female artist’s song indicating that, yes, this artist is indeed “weepy” and “uncool”. I would like to know precisely what this seemingly arbitrary definition is, because at some point Carina Round became lumped into this group and I’m calling bullshit.

“Pick up the phone,” Carina Round whispers on the opening line of her fourth album, Tigermending. That her conversation immediately takes an unexpected, heady turn (“I’m pregnant with your baby”) speaks to the gift for misdirection that makes Round such a compelling artist. There are a lot of things she does well, but it’s that particular talent that marks the album as an invigorating return to form following 2011’s subdued Early Winters EP.

"Pick up the phone/I'm pregnant with your baby," Carina Round sings on the opening track of Tigermending, her fourth album and first solo work in six years. It's an attention-getting salvo, one that marks her return as a more self-assured, mature artist than she was on Slow Motion Addict. After spending time touring and recording with Puscifer and her alt-country band the Early Winters, among many other projects, Round seems more, well, rounded on these songs, which balance the intensity of The Disconnection and the pop savvy of Slow Motion Addict, and also take her in entirely new directions.

It’s been five years since Carina Round released her last full album—2007’s Slow Motion Addict— but the L.A.-via-England singer/songwriter hasn’t been idle in the interim. She released the Things You Should Know EP in ‘09 and joined the more straightforward Early Winters and released an EP last year. She also joined Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer on tour and on last year’s Conditions of my Parole as a background singer while Round’s music found its way onto the silver screen with placements on shows such as American Horror Story, Pretty Little Liars and Dollhouse.
