Album Review: Lifeline by Ben Harper

His eight CDs have proved he’s an inventive recording artist, but troubadour Ben Harper lives to play on stage, where his music has always sounded warmest. For the follow-up to his ambitious 2006 double disc, Harper and his band entered a Paris studio directly from the road in an attempt to capture that heat. It worked: Lifeline thankfully favors songs over jamming, but there’s a casual profundity to tunes like ”Fight Outta You” and ”Say You Will” that a more complicated process might’ve squelched.
