Album Review: Demidevil [Mixtape] by Ashnikko

Great, Based on 4 Critics

The Line of Best Fit - 80
Based on rating 8/10

Having initially pushed back the release of her ten track mixtape Demidevil from November last year to 2021, a mix up meant that fans who had pre-ordered the vinyl received it far before the official release date, to which the London-based North Carolina-born rapper made her frustration succinctly clear on Twitter. Dragging the release forwards is a perfect example of Ashnikko 's headstrong and unapologetic approach to her music, overall vision and image, her singular appearance bouncing between high fashion cyber goth and Harajuku e-girl hyperreal anime muse. Her recent "Daisy" remix featuring iconic moe character Hatsune Miku makes perfect sense as soon as you clock her iconic blue do.

If you're in desperate need of a solid pick-me-up, then look no further than Ashnikko's mixtape 'Demidevil' - unless you are a cisgender heterosexual man with a particularly fragile ego and penchant for misogyny, then this probably isn't for you… Ashnikko's 'Demidevil' brings a certain comedic flair to the table of sassy songs surfacing, tailor made to empower womxn and poke fun at the kind of men who live for toxic masculinity. Never one to half-arse anything, the North Carolina rapper went full ham on this meaty mixtape, offering listeners an array of tasty tracks to satiate even the biggest of appetites - potentially more than some can stomach. 'Demidevil' is not one for the faint of heart.

DIY Magazine - 80
Based on rating 4/5

Ashnikko was always going to bring out a new mixtape with a bang, and 'Demidevil' arrives like a colourfully-chaotic cannonball. Banger-packed, the ten-track project finds Ash on her finest form, spitting cutting, unfiltered bars over glitchy R&B-infused booming pop backings. Teaming up with fellow a series of game-changing female artists, she recruits Kelis on sleek-pop sizzler 'Deal With It', Grimes on fiesty 'Cry', and Princess Nokia on 'Slumber Party' - a dancefloor-grind, girl-loving, sex-positive banger with the opening lines "I'm not shy I'll say it, I've been picturing you naked".

Pitchfork - 69
Based on rating 6.9/10

The 24-year-old alt-pop rapper Ashnikko commands fantasy and chaos with ease. She dresses as an eyeball-studded character for a performance of TikTok hit "Daisy" with just as much nonchalance as she posts photos of empty dildo containers stuffed with beans on Instagram. But Ashnikko's unselfconscious brazenness is a newer phenomenon in her young career.
