Which is precisely what the London-born songwriter (now based on the west coast of Ireland) has done on her third album, informed and thoroughly immersed in the delights of a happy relationship and the quest to lay down fresh roots in a new environment. You've heard love songs of course, but You and i are Earth essentially counts as an entire, uninterrupted love album, capturing different shades of the infatuation and mutual discovery of a burgeoning and gradually deepening relationship. It could easily curdle into a feast of gushy oversharing fit to invoke an involuntary sugar-rush amongst less loved-up listeners.
On the cover of Anna B Savage's new album You & i are Earth, the English singer/songwriter peers up impishly from a bed of moss and ferns, blue eyes fixed upon the viewer. It's a stark contrast to the cover images on her previous two records, in|FLUX (2023) and A Common Turn (2021), where her face is obscured in some vital way--inverted and looking askance in the former, wings covering her eyes on the latter. This shift is felt just as strongly in the content of You & i are Earth, which sways and swells like the first gentle exhale of spring after a long winter.
Celebrating the joys of settling down, and falling in love with a place as well as a person, has ended up producing her best album yet Anna B Savage is not as her name suggests. Although a surname like Savage may conjure up images of snarling, confrontational rock, in reality the Dublin-based Londoner’s music is far more laid-back. Anyone who’s heard her previous two albums will be familiar with Savage’s sparse, spacey songs.
