“Some people want me to be heads or tails/I say no way”. So opens the infectiously hip-gyrating ‘You Know You Like It’, a fine example of Aluna Francis’ saccharine vocals and the excellently warped technical stylings of producer George Reid. They’re everywhere. They’re on the overtly pop-sounding ‘Just A Touch’, which packs big sounds alongside infectious vocals and teeters into cheese.

The duo met on myspace with prior musical engagements. He (producer George Reid) likes Timbaland and The Neptunes, she (singer Aluna Francis) likes The Knife and CocoRosie.
George Reid, the producer half of London duo AlunaGeorge, has an ear for the slightly warped. Dust off your pagers and dial-up internet connections. On AlunaGeorge’s You Know You Like It, the nostalgia crescendos to a fever pitch so deafening, you can make out every vestige of circa-1999 R&B in its songs. These pinched, claustrophobic compositions unspool like a love letter to Jon B and 112. It’s not age-defying music by any stretch, but it is endearing.
AlunaGeorge is a duo from England that specializes in electronic R&B, pairing the vocals of lead singer Aluna Francis with the stuttering, whirring, snapping, clicking, ticking, squeaking, and thumping production of George Reid. The three tracks of the You Know You Like It EP manage this union with varying degrees of success. On the title track, the bass hammers through the divisions provided by the drum beats, giving a feel of reeling, rhythmic enjambment.
Some bands or artists find it incredibly easy to make progressive and inventive, slightly avant leaning electronica while conversely some artists eschew anything vaguely experimental in favour of going for all out hook filled pop hits. London RnB electro duo AlunaGeorge have the treasured talent of seemingly being able to combine both sounds effortlessly. The juxtaposition of inventive sounds with some of the best pop hooks you could hope to hear make them undoubtedly one of the most exciting groups in the UK right now.‘You Know You Like It’ EP is singer Aluna Francis and producer George Reid’s debut release for Tri Angle Records, and its three tracks offer a striking example of the duo’s abundant potential.
