Album Review: Nothing Violates This Nature by All Pigs Must Die

Great, Based on 6 Critics

The debut album from All Pigs Must Die, God Is War, was one of the most ferocious and perfectly realised records of recent years. To say that they’ve set the bar a bit high for themselves is understating it somewhat, but when you’re a band (some would say, supergroup) that features members of The Hope Conspiracy and Converge nothing is beyond the realms of possibility. There was a time when the sound of a band mixing d-beat, crust, hardcore and any number of metal genres together seemed to be a fresh and innovative development, but recently it’s started to become almost tiresome.

Seething with rage and possessed of a mean violent streak, All Pigs Must Die continue to rain sonic destruction down upon the metal world with their second album, Nothing Violates This Nature. Rampaging its way through its ten tracks, All Pigs Must Die once again show off their relentlessness with an album that mostly refuses to slow down once it gets up to speed (which is literally one second into the opening track, "Chaos Arise"). From there, the band proceeds to go on tear with the kind of explosive intensity that many bands only hope to hit.

In the worlds of hardcore, metal, and punk, the idea of what makes something heavy has been taken to some serious, even comical extremes. There are already bands tuning their guitars the lowest, playing their songs the fastest, and screaming the absolute loudest. For the most part, it’s been done. As such, a band must come correct with a serious artistic statement to rise above the din of the current fare.

Like a thuggish, feces-encrusted boot to the face, All Pigs Must Die’s new record Nothing Violates This Nature inflicts pain and suffering on the listener relentlessly. But pain and suffering is what this type of macho, über-angry hardcore is all about, right? This type of stuff is designed to make you feel like you are being physically beaten. As a long-time fan of metal and hardcore of all varieties, I have found myself in all sorts of sweaty, chaotic mosh pits over the years, but the only time that I have ever felt honesty afraid for my personal safety was at a Converge show back in 2007.

With the highly-anticipated successor to 2011’s incendiary God Is War, All Pigs Must Die (featuring member of Converge and The Hope Conspiracy) have somehow gone even more for the throat, barreling into their second album of crushing blackened thrash with every gun blazing. At times, this straightforward approach, along with a smoother production sound, strips the Massachusetts quartet of the nuanced breakdowns and guitar leads that made their previous material so captivating. But tracks like “Chaos Arise,” “Bloodlines,” and “Sacred Nothing” still provide all the tooth gnashing and fist swinging one wants from this fresh and fearsome new talent.

Alternative Press
Opinion: Fantastic

When All Pigs Must Die dropped 2011’s visceral God Is War, a damn fine record by anyone’s standards, they were still that band with members drawn from the ranks of the Hope Conspiracy, Bloodhorse and Converge. On Nothing Violates This Nature, the Boston hardcore mob demonstrate once and for all that they’re far more than the sum of their parts. It is also one of the angriest and most violent records you will encounter in 2013.
