Last gang in Brixton celebrate 20th anniversary with career peak Alabama 3 achieved immortality when Woke Up This Morning, from their Exile On Coldharbour Lane debut, provided the perfect theme song for The Sopranos. Now the debauched “chemical country” revival troupe led by Larry Love and Rev D Wayne Love is currently promoting their twelfth album on their 20th anniversary tour. .
Calling their 12h album Blues is a definite and deliberate statement for Alabama 3. The blues is one of many styles that they’ve experimented with over their history, and they have melded it to their own preferred shape. It’s also the genre that’s most central to their presentation. Alabama 3 are not from Alabama – they’re of course from Brixton – and there are more than three of them, but there’s a cod-Deep South vibe to their music even when they are playing acid house.
When they burst onto the music scene in 1995, Alabama 3 kept listeners guessing. For a start, they’re not from Alabama, nor are there three members in the band. On top of this, the UK group are best known for the stylistically eclectic brand of music, which blends blues, electronica, hip-hop, jazz, country and rock. The band’s sound is among the most unique of any of their contemporaries.
