Album Review: The Formula by 9th Wonder & Buckshot

Fairly Good, Based on 2 Critics

NOW Magazine - 60
Based on rating 3/5

Did you see that YouTube clip with Buckshot Shorty gushing over his (shockingly numerous) Simpsons figurines, re-enacting a scrap between Todd Flanders, Kearney and Nelson Muntz? Truly, wonderfully absurd. He is evidently in a comfortable place in his storied hip-hop life, and this playful persona finds its way into more than a few of the recordings on this solid sophomore side project. 9th Wonder can now give the BDI Emcee his top-batch beats since being disowned by Little Brother, so a multitude of satisfying soul-inflected thumpers grace The Formula.

Opinion: Very Good

Raleigh's 9th Wonder considers himself a hip-hop scholar. Reared on the production prowess of Pete Rock, Dilla, Primo and RZA, he opted for a PC instead of an MPC some years back and developed his own inimitable style. Coming up with the group Little Brother, he has since added production credits for Hova and Beyoncé to his resume. Fresh off producing Nu Amerykah's lead single "Honey," he recently presented a seminar at Duke University dubbed "The Art of Hip Hop Sampling." He also doubles as Artist-In-Residence at North Carolina Central University and teaches a hip hop history class at the college.
