In disarray after the death of their original guitarist Rob Buck in 2000, it took 13 years for the recalibrated 10,000 Maniacs to finally make another record. That LP, Music From The Motion Picture, frequently harked back to the mellow, jangly pop that brought the New York-based quintet to platinum-selling prominence with albums such as 1989’s Blind Man’s Zoo. Its relatively brisk follow-up Twice Told Tales is, however, a notable departure.

Reuniting with founding member John Lombardo, 10,000 Maniacs return to their roots in other ways on 2015's Twice Told Tales. This is their first collection devoted entirely to covers of traditional folk songs, all from the British Isles. Some of these 14 songs are instrumental or scaled back so they're stark, but much of the album is delivered in the chipper style that recalls the jangle of In My Tribe.
