Set Yourself Apart From the Pack

What's red, has two oscillators and 56 patch points, and gobs of attitude? The Behringer Neutron semi-modular analog synth offers seemingly no end to the delightful sonic mischief you can patch your way into. With a duo of punchy morphable-waveform oscillators and generous modulation options, this standalone/Eurorack duophonic synthesizer delivers searing leads that'll strip the paint off club walls, and massive basses that will blow them down. From mesmerizing celestial pads to blippy extraterrestrials, Neutron has you covered. For sonic expression, CV (control voltage) is where it's at, and the Neutron offers full access. With its sizable patchbay, you can forge your own completely unique signature sounds and set yourself apart from the pack — even if the pack is geared up with Neutrons!

Flexibility on par with many fully modular synths

Behringer's Neutron is a semi-modular synth, which means it features a normalled signal path that will produce sound without any patching. But when you're ready to roll up your sleeves and get serious, start throwing patches and let the creativity begin. Where most semi-modulars offer some degree of patchability, Neutron's 56-point patchbay offers flexibility on par with many fully modular synthesizers. In essence, you're wiring up the signal paths of your synth, overriding the manufacturer's choices with patch cords that can connect to patch points within the instrument, or externally to other gear.

Value-packed analog beast

An original design from Behringer and the propellerheads at Midas in England, Neutron is an all-analog beast; even the onboard delay is a BBD (Bucket Brigade Device). The voltage-controlled oscillators use the reissued Curtis CEM3340 chip — originally deployed in classic 1970s synthesizers such as the OBXa, OBSx, OB8, SH101, Jupiter6, and Prophet5. Legendary company, indeed. Sweetwater's advice: Behringer's Neutron sounds tremendous and offers a mind-boggling degree of sonic versatility. Plus, it's an incredible value. And it's red. Don't even think about it — you need it.

Neutron is one amazing Synthesizer, giving me so many ways to creat endless sound scapes.

Background: Drummer, Recording Engineer, Studio owner, Synthesizer owner and programmer since 1972. I've owned or worked dozens of Synthesizers over the years. Last January I started to build a new, modern Music Workstation in my music room and this Behringer Neutron really caught my interest. In addition to the many "Synth Clones" on the market I knew I also wanted a Synth that was Unique with its own identity. The Neutron is just that Synth. Since I am not new to modular Synths I found it very intuitive and easy to sculpt sounds. New comers might find it a bit daunting but there are some excellent videos out there, in particular one from XNB.

The Neutron is a very capable Synth with so much flexibility. The 3340 Multi Waveform Oscillators are excellent, these Oscillators have been used by  Roland, Moog, Oberheim, Doepfer, Crumar, Octave-Plateau, Sequential to name a few. The ability to either Morph or directly switch between wave shapes give me so many more possibilities to shape my sounds.

The same holds true for the LFO, morphing between wave shapes just gives me so many more options when creating sounds. The Range of the Oscillators and ability to easily control them is well designed. Having Oscillator Sync is a nice feature and Paraphonic capability allows me to control the Oscillators independently fo a wider range of tonal possibilities.

The Pre Wired Signal Path is logical with the exception that everything ultimately goes through the OVERDRIVE Section which is not something you might always want this as it adds it's own tonality to the final sound but it is easily altered with one simple patch cord from the VCF Out to the VCA In. Also nice design is feature, The Patch Bay is smartly placed to the right side, keeping all of the cables out of the way of the control Knobs and Switches. This is where the Neutron showed its real power, the Patching Options give you so much control.

With the Updated Firmware (currently 2.0.2) you have the ability to use the new Neutron Application on your Mac or Windows Computer. This is a great Bonus. The Application can control every Parameter of the Neutron in Real Time, so let's say you change the Range of the Oscillators in the App you will see the change take place on the Neutron.
The App also lets you change other parameters that can't be done on the Neutron easily or in some case not at all directly, like AutoGlide, Pitch Bend Range and Note Priority.

I also like the full size 5 pin Midi connectors, External Input

So what are the negatives or things to consider:
No Arpeggiator or Sequencer or the ability to play notes so you will need an external Controller. I use my KeyStep 37.
The Oscillator Tuning Knobs are too large and are easily moved by accident putting the Oscillators out of tune but my easy solution was to replace them with smaller knobs.. problem solved.
If you are new to Semi-Modular Synthesizers or new to Synthesizers in general the Neutron probably should not be your first choice and certainly not your only Synthesizer. There will be a learning curve and it will take some time which might frustrate some folks. The Neutron should be considered as an addition and compliment to one's overall Synth Setup.

Overall the Neutron is one powerful Synthesizer, with plenty of control and sound sculpting potential for an incredible price. Get one and have some fun!

Automatic Classic

I own two of these and absolutely love their unique sound. From fat gritty basslines to amazing lush leads, this synth can do more than you can believe for it's size. The thoughtful interface is superb. The patch bay is perfect. I can't say enough good things about this semi modular synth. Buy one before it's too late.

Seriously awesome . . .

Warning . . . exposure to the Neutron synth can become highly addictive!
Friends will come by after not having seen you for days, only to discover you slumped over your Neutron, succumbed to the temptation of discovering yet another unique soundscape . . .
Well, OK, on a slightly more serious note, for the amount of money one might spend for a full on modular analog synth, this is by far the best hardware option one can get into for a very reasonable price. At first, it took a bit of experimenting to actually get audible sound, but aside from that momentary distraction, the possibilities are essentially endless.
I'm very much into the more experimental versions of soundscape construction, and this fits perfectly into that category.
When mixed together with various effects pedals, and DAW well suited for this type of audio creation, the possibilities really are ridiculously endless. Of course, the neighbors might not be nearly as enthusiastic about hearing mysterious sounds perpetually emanating out of your home synth lab . . .
Anyway, would I recommend this to anyone interested in this sort of equipment? Yes, in a heartbeat.
Pictured here is the Neutron during primordial setup, fresh out of the box, and some waveform analysis with the Neutron plugged into various external mod units.

Love it!

Rich, thick, unique, and punchy. Lots of bang for the buck.
I'd certainly recommend the Neutron for newbies to analogue synths, but I have not been able to find MIDI control mapping.

Pretty awesome!

I swore that I'd never buy any Behringer products but I watched a few review / demos about the Neutron and thought that it sounded good. I love it. It's punchy and rich, has solid straight forward controls, and patches to my Moogs. I'm looking into maybe owning a few of the other Behringer mods that will fit into a Eurorack. A deal for the price; we'll see how it stands up.
I couldn't find any MIDI CC implementation for the Neutron and haven't had a chance to experiment, but I'm satisfied just being able to sequence notes and record.
Totally recommend!
