Iconic Guitar Amp Mic

You couldn’t ask for a handier guitar amp microphone than the Sennheiser e609 Silver. Just like the classic MD 409, the e609 likes to be right up on the grille of your guitar cabinet, to the degree that you can just drape it over your amp and let it hang there in the right spot on your amp — no stand needed! A natural 40Hz low-frequency cutoff prevents excessive boominess, and it’s virtually impossible to overload the e609, so go ahead and crank it up. Other things to note are its clear sound, courtesy of a powerful neodymium magnet and hum-compensating coil.

Up close and personal

The e609 has a clear character of its own. Lows are tight and punchy without booming, the mids are rich, and the highs are present without sounding harsh. Engineers here at Sweetwater and beyond agree that the best sound you'll get out of this mic is when you simply drape it over your amp and let them meet grille to grille. Combined with its tight supercardioid polar pattern, this close mic position makes the e609 virtually impervious to off-axis sound. No feedback or mic bleed here!

Sennheiser e609 Silver Dynamic Mic Features:

  • Go-to dynamic guitar cab mic for engineers around the world
  • Just drape it over your amp and let the mic rest right on the grille
  • Delivers tight and punchy lows, rich mids, and present yet smooth highs
  • Absurdly high SPL handling makes it perfect for capturing dimed amps
  • Supercardioid polar pattern provides high off-axis sound rejection and minimal feedback

Works great

I bought this mic for my cab. I have Victory Duchess V4 pedal size amp which sounds amazing but the line out to the mixer sounds horrible. So instead of running line out to mixer I bought this to mic my cab with and it sounds like my speaker instead of some nasal thin nastiness. I like the idea of not having to use a mic stand but make sure the cable you are using doesn't have any supportive backing close to the connection it will cause the mic to hang sideways and alter your mic placement.

Sounds great....easy setup!

This is a very suitable replacement for your trusty 57. Honestly, I just don't want to carry another mic stand. It looks cool, hangs easy, and delivers on sound quality.

E 609 as a live vocal mic too?

After learning what this mic is typically used for through YouTube reviews( close micing a guitar amp and other studio applications ) I noticed it was consistently being compared to side by side or vs a Shure sm57 which is what I use as my live vocal mic in our band "the audience" .Through the videos the verdict was that the e609 was very similar but slightly warmer.
I have used a Shure sm57 beta as my dedicated live vocal mic for over ten years and it has been perfect for reducing stage feedback as you are required to be directly in front of the mic to get the full response from the mic without having to crank the gain on the mixer which essentially reduces more feedback than other typical stage mics.
I also liked the crispness but was curious about trying the e609 as a possible replacement or addition to my live vocal mic options.
In short I can say the e609 has now replaced the Shure sm57 beta as my main live stage vocal microphone.
With that said both mics to me "dry" (no reverb or effects) sound ok but I've never liked any microphone this way.
Dry, the e609 proved to be a bit warmer and the area in front and in near proximity ( an inch or two in all directions from the center of the mic) was an added bonus as far as having some headroom and volume control to work with while singing with out risking feedback or needing to crank the volume or gain to create a better response. Also for a greater boost in needed volume ,(kissing) right on the mic dead center gives you more volume with a boost in the low and mids then I would ever ask for. So plenty of flexibility for a vocalist to amplify a quiet voice , textures, or back off and belt without killing people.
The natural eq of the e609 would never be an issue for me as I do run my mic through a vocal pedal board I created which has helped me achieve the vocal clarity and sound I prefer regardless of the PA system or venue I may be subjected to.
My vocal pedlal board is nothing too overly extreme but simple eq , echos, and occasional distortion and is all utilizing tguitar pedals and made possible by the following set up.
E609—into —pedal cracker XLR input
——from pedal cracker effects loop-
——into Ibanez tube screame
—- to MXR 10 band eq(with pre and post volume control
—-to VHT reverb delay double stomp pedal
—-back into pedal crackers effects loop
—- Out of pedal crackers XLR out to mixing board or PA channel with 12:00 on all pa's EQ's.

Ibanez tube screamer is set with a light overdriven effect with
gain at 10:00
Tone at 12:00
Volume at 12:00

MXR Eq is set to brighten the mid and highs and lows are all knocked way down low. MXR volumes are set just above unity gain for a slight taste of bite and presence .

VHT Reverb is set to a water distant medium echo while delay is set as a doubler with a very short delay with no repeat... just an instant doubler.

Pedal cracker has a wet mix ( how much of the effect pedals get mixed in to the vocal ) which I set as almost all the way up and the dry mix is at 12:00. Then the pedal cracker lets me set the main volume where ther real magic happens and the e609 really shows its potential. This setting changes with band volume and room /venue acoustics.
The e609 in combination with this "singing through guitar pedals set up" allows for lots of non muddy, clear crisp vocal presence and no feedback. I have it on a 19" gooseneck to easily make any position adjustment with one hand.
I believe the e609 would shine on its own as a live vocal pedal ( no pedals) with a little eq adjustment on the PA channel which for me is almost no lows, mids at 1:00 and highs at 2:00 or as high as it can go before feedback and maybe some on board reverb which most PAs have built in.

Hope this was helpful for considering the e609 as a vocal mic. Definitely also good to have around for recording applications of all kinds as well.

Great on a drum kit too!

So I actually bought these to use as tom mics for my drum kit. I saw a video of a studio using them on their rack toms and figured I'd look into it. And these things are AWESOME. They're super transparent in their tone, have excellent off axis rejection, and more affordable than other supercardioid "drum mics". Even on the floor tom that's tuned as low as it can while still producing tonality, it captures it all. If you're a drummer looking for a "budget" option for mics, and have your own stands or rim clips, I highly recommend giving these a shot.

Great Alternative to an SM57

The mic is compact and light and has a more evenly tempered high end than the 57 (in that it has less peaks and valleys than the shure). The mic is BRIGHT. Top end for days. The mid range is there a bit more than the 57 and if the source is right on the mic the bottom end isnt bad. At any kind of distance though, the bottom end suffers a bit.
Check out the video to compare this to the e906 and SM57.

Low on funds and looking to record your best guitar solo ever? Instead of following everyone else and buying the obvious brand for a little less money, reward yourself with an audio upgrade to the E 609 Silver. Your ears will still love you in the morning.

This is such a great mic for mic'ing guitar cabinets. No cabling connectors stick out to get bumped and the sound is very focused without getting pointy or woofy. The price point makes this sonic-upgrade a hard mic to pass up when comparing it to the long time standard.
