Review the right product!

This pad is excellent, and no, I don't work for Remo. The other reviews to this point are obviously of the regular Remo tunable pad, and I don't even think that those are accurate. But if you put a Silentstroke head on the pad (and these are supposed to be reviews of the Silentstroke version), it is MUCH quieter than the Vic Firth. Furthermore, the mesh head does NOT dent! The feel is not quite as much like a drum as the regular head, but it is tunable so you can get pretty close if you tighten it up. As far as noise reduction, this is the best pad I've used.

Quiet Practice Pad Review

Side by side comparison of the 3 pads that caught my interest:

Remo Silent Stroke
RTOM Moongel Workout Pad
Aquarian Quik-Bounce

I already owned the Aquarian Quik-Bounce, so this review is to compare the others to it, as Iwas looking for something quieter to use in my office at work.
The Aquarian is a standard rubber pad, it gives a good rebound with the expected amount of volume. Unfortunately, a volume that exceeds any amount of practicing in an office environment especially if you're a heavy hitter. It has a foam base for a desktop, and an 8mm screw thread to mount to a cymbal stand. Big enough to hit, small enough to be portable. A great all round single surface pad.

The Moongel pad is, as it suggests, a workout! There is little to no rebound from this pad, so you are doing all the work. It's great for played notes, not bounced, and will really develop those forearm muscles for playing around the kit. Volume wise, it's perfect for what I wanted, the office space, exceptionally quiet, usable anywhere, even sitting next to someone on a bus, train, plane, etc. you would barely hear the drummer with this thing. It is the most expensive of the 3.

Remo's "Silent Stroke" pad has got to be the quietest of the 3, right, I mean, it's in the name! Boasting an 80% noise reduction from their original, this is still the loudest of the 3 pads. I guess "Not quite as loud as our previous practice pad" didn't have quite the same ring to it... It is quieter, sure, and has a decent rebound bounce to it, yes, and it is the cheapest of the 3, even though it has the most parts. However... it's advertised as fitting "most" cymbal stands. All 3 of these pads have a foam ring to be used on a desk top or table top, and all 3 possess as screw thread to mount the pad to a cymbal stand. Unfortunately, Remo are a little behind the times, their screw thread is for a 6 mm cymbal stand, MOST cymbal stands are 8mm these days, so I had to retro-fit it with a little engineering experience, drill and tap it with an 8mm thread. It's Remo, so it's a quality product, but come on guys, putting a smaller thread on this makes it practically unusable right out of the box for most people.

In short:

Aquarian - nice compact size, standard features for a rubber pad, good rebound, a little too much volume for my purposes.

Moongel - definitely a workout, little to no rebound, practically silent, perfect for my needs

Remo - a good standard alternative to a rubber pad, not the choice if you're looking for a quiet pad, and the "wrong" size mounting screw put this one in last place.

Not so silent

I was hoping for real silence so I could practice late at night. But the Remo is actually louder than my Vic Firth rubber surface practice pad. Very disappointing. The Remo's one virtue is that it's very light (and MUCH lighter than the far superior Vic Firth), so I can throw it in my suitcase when I'm traveling without drums and still stay under the 50-lb airline max. Tip: You'll want to put a towel under it if you practice standing up as I do -- makes it a little quieter and keeps it from sliding around so much.

Sounds really bad

I hate to be so negative, but this thing sounds really bad. I mean, you can tune it, but its still a practice pad so it doesnt sound like a drum. The foam bottom doesnt grip anything and the head dents easily. It isnt good for marching snare practice either because the rim on this thing totally deteriorates from rim hits. If you do beginning percussion in middle or elementary school, you need this. If youre literally any other kind of drummer or percussionist, youre honestly better off practicing on your knees.
