Drum Miking Made Easy

Looking for a streamlined mic solution for snare drums, toms, and other percussion instruments? Sweetwater has a recommendation: the Beyerdynamic TG D58c. Onstage or in the studio, this clip-on condenser mic's compact form factor, patented clamp mount, and .78" gooseneck with horizontal swivel joint give you the flexibility to get into tight spaces around the drum kit and capture your source from its sweet spot, while its cardioid polar pattern rejects unwanted ambient sound and delivers high gain before feedback. Mounting the TG D58c is quick and easy, letting you mic an entire drum kit in minutes. With its integrated preamp, the microphone captures clean, powerful, punchy sound with a full 20-20kHz frequency response at close range, and you can plug it directly into a line input — very handy, indeed! The TG D58c's 140dB maximum SPL rating lets you mic beastly drummers without overload concerns, while the mic's elastic capsule suspension protects against damage from errant drumstick strikes.

Beyerdynamic TG D58c Features:

  • Pressure Gradient Condenser (back electret) drum and percussion mic
  • Patented mic clamp and .78" gooseneck with horizontal swivel joint lets you get into tight spaces around the drum kit
  • Integrated preamp for clean, punchy, full-frequency sound capture
  • Cardioid polar pattern delivers high gain before feedback
  • 12V-48V phantom powering (48V recommended)
  • Rugged construction with elastic capsule suspension that protects against damage
  • Maximum SPL (24V/48V): 140dB handles loud sources with aplomb

Small mics, Big sound!

I'm really impressed with these little guys! My rack toms sound nice and full, but also have a lot of attack.

I play a lot of fast tom rolls, and these mics pick up each hit without getting muddy.
They hang on tight so I don't have to worry about them going anywhere, and they stay far out of the way so I never need to worry about hitting them.

Just remember to turn on phantom power for them to operate!

Perfect for Wood hoops - Pro sound

1. Perfect clip for thick wood hoops.
2. XLR connection from the base enables me to position my cymbals lower.
3. The fixed mic distance from the head makes sound checking fast and easy - always in the same position!
4. Great sounding mic with built in clip.

Perhaps the best mid-priced tom mic around

Picked up one of these out of curiosity to see how a condenser mic would sound on toms. My existing Lewitt tom mics were too bulky for the batter head side. On floor toms I had two Heil PR-31s. The TG D58c is extremely small in profile for a direct mounted tom mic. I borrowed a couple of mics and ran it against the Lewitt tom mic, SM57, SE V7X, Sennheiser e604, Heil PR-20, Apex tom mic, Lewitt MTP440DM, Sennheiser e906, CADlive D80, Beyerdynamic TG i51, etc.

For rack toms, only the Heil PR-31 matched it for frequency response, attack, and all around tone. The Lewitt appeared dark by comparison. As a result, I picked up three more so I have one on each rack tom and one on snare underneath. The Lewitt tom mics went to the resonant heads, while the Beyerdynamic TG D70 MKII replaced the Heils on floor toms.

They aren't Earthworks, but for mid-range kit they are excellent.

Wow! What a difference these little guys make!

I have always enjoyed using condensers for drums. I thought I would try a few of these out. Boy, was I surprised when I lit these guys up! Paul Lea suggested the 58's due to the short length of the boom to stay out of the way of the drummer. i believe he was right. In any case, these little guys sound pretty amazing and has a great sound without much EQ. I ended up ordering more so that I could have a complete set for percussion. Probably the best mic's I have used so far on drums.

The setup on these are super simple, and save time on setup as well. Normally, you are using mics, with clamps, and having to settle on where you are placing them on the Kit. These are so easy, that you grab the mic, clamp it to the the rim, and attach the cable. DONE!

Synopsis: Just spend the money, you will not be disappointed. From a sound reinforcement perspective, you cannot go wrong on these. They will save you time, and sound amazing!

Thank you Beyer!

Best Sounding Mics for Drums

I first heard these mics on Phil Collins drums in concert and they sound so good live. I purchased these mics to place on drums when I do sound for bands. I always get complements on how the drums sound. I have never found a drum set that they couldn't be attached to. All the drum players I've worked with love the low profile and they get complements on there drum sound. I have also used these on horns a few times and they work and sounded amazing. You can't beat the quality, they are made well and sound amazing. I have been using these for five years and never had an issue with any of them. I'm adding these newer models to my selection of mics. You and everyone you work with will love these mics.
