Snocaps are led by the Crutchfield sisters, Katie (Waxahatchee) and Allison (Swearin'), who used to play together in the scrappy indie band P.S. Eliot that were active for a few years in the late-2000s and early 2010s. Their self-titled album also features guitarist MJ Lenderman, although you wouldn't know that without me telling you so, it since he doesn't get any spotlight harmony moments like he did on "Right Back to It." Adding to the "Avengers assemble" vibe is the presence of Brad Cook, a multi-instrumentalist who produced Waxahatcheee's last couple of albums.
Snocaps will no doubt be heralded by long-time fans as the return of the Crutchfield sisters. Katie Crutchfield has certainly had quite a prolific go of it in recent years. From a string of highly popular (and critically lauded) albums of her own as Waxahatchee, to a full-length album with Jess Williamson performing as Plains, to a string of one off singles with everyone from partner Kevin Morby to country superstar Wynonna.
Halloween is, of course, a time of tricks and treats, but few expected this gem to be handed out as a release on All Hallow's Eve. Named rather appropriately for an American candy (think the opposite of pick'n'mix fave white chocolate jazzies), the surprise full-length from new "supergroup" Snocaps - aka Crutchfield sisters Katie and Allison, with a little help from MJ Lenderman and Brad Cook - is as delightfully satisfying as you'd imagine. Reuniting for their first official project together since their teenage band PS Eliot broke up in 2011, this self-titled offering is a well-worn, comforting reminder of both their prowess and dedication as musicians (and siblings), bearing more than few fingerprints of Waxahatchee ('Wasteland', 'Cherry Hard Candy') and Swearin' ('Brand New City').
