Paul Wilkes should be more popular by: Tim Wardyn

Paul Wilkes should be more popular than he is especially here in the United States. Here we are enamored with Damien Rice and have unfortunately passed off David Gray as a passing fancy. Both are fantastic musicians with tug-at-your-heartstrings vocals that deliver empassioned words with the quiet intensity of an undetenated bomb. Wilkes vocals are as intense and powerful on his EP "They’ve Got Nothing On You."

The music is filled with minor chords that perfectly complement the lost love feeling that permeates the disc. On "In the End," Wilkes laments on the chorus that "I said that/ I don’t understand why/ I promised myself/ That everything is gonna work out in the end." The title track is quite similar to Damien Rice or even Elliott Smith with its soft introspection and words that are barely audible at times.

These songs are perfect for anybody who has just ended a relationship. Every time I listen to this disc, I picture walking in the open country listening to this and wallowing in my own manufactured sorrow. Even if you are in a stable relationship in the middle of the city it is a great way to get an in depth look at a man baring his scarred-soul at the ripe age of 23.
